Jonathan Lipps: Confessions

Anachronists June 26, 2025 Bandcamp Spotify Apple Music iTunes

Over 1600 years ago, North African bishop St. Augustine of Hippo broke new ground in the history of literature, theology, and spirituality with the penning of his Confessions. The work is regarded as a watershed moment in the history of autobiography and is read today in a variety of contexts, from undergraduate humanities classrooms to devotional book clubs. Our modern relationship to this text is very often just that: text-based. This album, the first from the Anachronists project, is dedicated to the idea that there is much of value in ancient works like Confessions, to which we can relate in many ways beyond the academic and intellectual. 3 artists including myself each wrote two songs, and we collaborated together on all of them. The songs I authored are "Get Up O Sleeper" and "The Daily Furnace". You can also check out a podcast we recorded with Regent College that discusses the album and its origins in great detail!
